HARRISONBURG — Massanutten Technical Center’s annual job fair has found a new home after out growing its old location.
Each year the technical center invites businesses from all over the Valley to talk to second- year students about the job opportunities that exist once they graduate. The event was previously held at Massanutten Technical Center, however, there are too many vendors to have it there this year, Director Kevin Hutton said.
“We’re at the point where we can’t hold it here anymore,” Hutton said.
With over 115 businesses and vendors scheduled to attend the event on Thursday, it will now be held at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds.
Over 400 students graduating from a two- year program at MTC and the center’s continuing education adult students are planning to attend the event.
Vendors will have an opportunity to informally meet high school instructors and share information about the training and business employment needs within the community as well.
Hutton said that every year about eight to 10 students walk away from the career fair with a job offer.
All students will have their resumes on hand, and many will also come with portfolios.
The event is organized by Debbie Rhodes, the center’s job placement coordinator. Rhodes reaches out to local businesses and organizations and asks them to participate.
Because the event is so successful, once a vendor attends, they often ask to be included in the event in the future, Hutton said. They have a tentative date picked out for next year for that exact reason.
For new attendees, Hutton said that Rhodes “works really hard to get them interested.”
