WEYERS CAVE — Federal funding is landing at Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport.
Grants announced Tuesday by the offices of U. S. Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner will be used to replace decades- old runway signs and study the environmental impact of planned improvements to the Weyers Cave airport.
According to a press release, $ 506,000 has been awarded for the projects by Federal Aviation Administration. The funding is part of $ 11.7 million being disbursed to 20 Virginia airports, the release says.
Greg Campbell, executive director of Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, said the airport applied for the funding in the spring.
The federal money covers 90 percent of the projects’ overall cost.
SVRA must kick in another 2 percent, and the state covers the rest.
One grant for $ 232,000 will fund environmental studies of proposed projects in the airport’s 20- year and five- year capital improvement plans, Campbell said.
The studies will be conducted by Richmond- based firm Delta Airport Consultants Inc.
The second grant of $ 274,000 will be used to replace 40 of the existing
airfield signs, which Campbell said were built in the 1990s.
“Those signs are 15- plus years old and have incandescent bulbs,” he said. “They are to the point where they need to be replaced.”
The new signs will use LED lighting and feature reflective markings.
“This will affect the airport and its ability to meet the needs of the community, and keep a state- of- the- art facility that is safe and accessible,” Campbell said. “Both are critically important to economic development and tourism.”
Most signs will be installed at night when air traffic is slower, Campbell said, and should be complete by the end of the year.
He anticipates the environmental assessments to be complete by next summer.
