HARRISONBURG — Brothers Craft Brewing is kicking off American Craft Beer Week with the return of its May Music Festival today to ring in the summer season with live music, food, games and nice cold brews.

Entering its fourth year, the brewery’s May Music Festival has evolved over the years, according to taproom manager Josh Harold. The event was originally conceived as the brewery’s first outdoor festival, but “we decided to build on,” he said.

Last year, the festival took on a philanthropic cause. Brothers will continue the tradition this year by donating a portion of sales to Cat’s Cradle and Nerdy Dog’s Pet Shop and Rescue.

Like last year, the two organizations will have cats and dogs available for adoption at the festival.

“It was so well received [ last year],” Harold said. “We did see a handful of dogs and cats get adopted.”

Cat’s Cradle and Nerdy Dog’s will have the pets there from 2 to 6 p. m. and will be accept donations.

Brothers has typically used the May Music Festival to highlight its session IPA, Drift. But this year, they are bringing back a fan favorite, Gosecolada, a seasonal brew from last year.

“Gosecolada is a gose-style ale that’s pina colada- inspired,” Harold said. “It’s a gose on pineapple and coconut. Gosecolada was so popular we decided to bring it back this year as a seasonal. It’s the perfect beer for this type of weather. It’s light and crisp.”

Drift will still flow from the taps. The brew is lighter than a standard IPA with citrusy hops, Harold said.

“You’re able to enjoy it on a nice summer day without clogging your palette,” he said.
Brothers will have several other beers on tap, including Reddish Knob, Lil’ Hellion, Saison du Tropique, Drunken Mornings, Coconut Resolute, Intermezzo and In Plain Sight.

CrossKeys Vineyards and Bold Rock Cidery will also have wine and cider on tap starting at 3 p. m.

The Shenandoah Valley Art Mobile is sponsoring an art market starting at 2 p. m., which will include local artists painting on site and a workshop for all ages. Shenandoah Valley Art Mobile is a new nonprofit that seeks to increase access to art with a mobile art studio and classroom.

Five local bands will perform throughout the afternoon and evening, beginning at 3 p. m. The Judy Chops, a seven- piece outfit that blends swing, Americana and the blues, will release its album at the festival. The rest of the lineup includes indie band Illiterate Light, garage and funk group Paracosm, psychedelic rock band Psychonaut and hip- hop artist Grayling Skyy.

“[ We] wanted to find a bunch of local bands from Harrisonburg and Virginia … that appeal to different tastes,” Harold said.

Korean food truck Mashita and Hank’s fly’n Pig, a barbecue food truck, will serve food along with gourmet popcorn from PrePOPsterous.

Cornhole, giant Jenga and giant Yahtzee games will be available at the festival. Since the festival centers on pet adoptions, dogs are welcome on the patio. The festival is free to attend.

The May Music Festival will usher in American Craft Beer Week, which runs from Monday through May 20. Organized by the Craft Brewers Association, the week is celebrated across the country in support of small and independent craft brewers, who offer special beers and events throughout the week.

“It’s a national promotion to get people out drinking craft beer,” Harold said.

Brothers will offer daily specials throughout the week.

The brewery will celebrate the occasion with its monthly Cask for a Cause on Friday. The event will benefit The Save Lucy Campaign, a Mount Solon- based nonprofit “created to raise awareness of white- nose syndrome and its d e v a s t a t i n g i m p a c t on North American bats,” according to its website. Food will be provided by Mashita, and musician Randy Black will perform on May 18, as well as during the regular Rejuvenating Saturday event the following day. Flavor Savor BBQ will serve food at the brewery on the last day of American Craft Beer Week, May 20.
