FULKS RUN — Every student from Fulks Run Elementary School spent their Friday morning volunteering or helping in some way in their community for the school’s first “Cardinals Give Back” day.
This year the school’s motto is “Cardinals Care,” and thinking about what that means, volunteering quickly came to mind, said Principal Alisa Sims. “Some kids might not get exposure to volunteering if they don’t get that experience at school,” Sims said. Teachers and administrators came up with a list of places students could volunteer — cleaning up parks, helping at the library, volunteering at Showalter’s Orchard near Timberville.
On Friday, students were split into groups and taken to one of approximately a half- dozen locations where they spent the morning helping out. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students, as well as students who didn’t have parental permission,
stayed and helped out around the school, weeding flower beds and other activities.
At the Fulks Run Ruritan Club, students mulched flower beds and pulled up weeds an swept inside and outside the various buildings.
“I’m having fun,” said third- grader Mason Caplinger. When asked why they were there and what they were doing, Mason said: “Because Cardinals give back!”
Fulks Run Elementary School is one of the smallest in Rockingham County with only 162 students.
