Foundation Seeks OK On Building Changes
Wants To Create Museum, Gift Shop

NEW MARKET — The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation wants to convert a former New Market parsonage into an archive facility, museum and gift shop.
Town Council will hold a joint public hearing with the Planning Commission to consider a conditional-use permit for 9276 N. Congress St. during a special meeting Tuesday.
The battlefields foundation is trying to purchase the former Reformation Lutheran Church parsonage, which includes a 1.25- acre parcel.
Most of the 2,700-square foot residential building would be an archive facility, according to the permit application. About 900 square feet would be used for a museum and gift shop.
The archive area would contain records and artifacts and only be accessible by staff.
Council tabled a requested letter in support of the
purchase at its meeting last month over concerns about the property being placed in a conservation easement, Town Manager Todd Walters said. The easement would keep the land from being developed in the future.
The property would be open from 10a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays through Mondays between April and October.
The foundation would provide four parking spaces and seek an agreement with neighboring properties for additional parking.
Council also will hold a public hearing on a conditional-use permit for Good Life Corp. The business provides group homes for people with intellectual disabilities.
The organization wants to change the use of a building at 178 Early St. to multifamily for living quarters and an office.
The hearings start at 7:30 p. m. on Tuesday at the New Market Municipal Building, 9418 John Sevier Road. The Planning Commission will consider the requests during a meeting following the hearing.
