HARRISONBURG— The Daily News-Record’s Senior Expo will bring together the latest products and resources for older adults in an effort to try and match up the community with different services in the area.
On Sunday, the Rockingham County Fairgrounds main exhibit hall will be filled with local vendors offering a variety of services.
“We are excited about hosting our first Senior Expo because there isn’t another event like this in the Valley,” said Rhonda McNeal, director of advertising at DN- R. “There are great area businesses that have a lot to offer older adults and their caregivers. We felt an expo would be a great way to bring them together.”
Vendors include Augusta Health, Blue Ridge Hearing Center, Cancer Screen Advocates, Hearing Life, James Madison University Department of Kinesiology and Smiles For Life Dental Care.
“We’ve worked hard so there would be a wide variety of vendors at the expo,” McNeal said. “Even if you’re not a senior yourself, maybe your parents are getting to the age that they need a little more help — this is for you too.”
Live music by Mr. Ed & Winnie will feature hits from the 1940s, ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s.
Jennifer Dehoff, marketing and events coordinator at the DN-R, said the expo is a brand new effort for the community.
“Our goal is to create opportunities for older adults to learn about local services and products that can help them live their best life,” Dehoff said. “We’re happy to host this event to benefit the community.”
The Senior Expo is from noon to 3 p.m., with a presentation at 1 p.m. on “Live at Home for a lifetime: Home Modifications to Age in Place” with speaker Charles Hendricks of Gaines Group Architects.
“One of the big topics for many seniors is their desire to live at their home for as long as possible,” Dehoff said. “That’s why we’re pleased that Charles Hendricks of Gaines Group Architects is giving a presentation about home modifications. Even small modifications can enable people to live at home longer.”
Throughout the day, giveaways, health screenings and door prizes will be offered. Cinnamon Bear will provide refreshments.
Sentara and Marketplace Agency & Elder Care are this year’s platinum sponsors, along with gold sponsors Bridgewater Retirement Community, Clark & Bradshaw, Sunnyside and Everence.
