County Sells Old School For $ 400K

HARRISONBURG — Blue Ridge Christian School, it appears, has found its next home.
After meeting in executive session Wednesday, the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to sell the former county schoolhouse to the Christian school that operates out of its Bridgewater headquarters. County Administrator Stephen King said the school’s bid for the property was $400,000.
Some details still must be finalized, and board Chairman Pablo Cuevas asked county staff to expedite the sale “so that we can make this facility as soon as possible available to the parties involved so that they can proceed with their necessary work to get themselves in proper shape, to take care of their business.”
Chris Goehner, president of the BRCS board of directors, said last month that the school needed a building as soon as possible.
The school building on Mill Street in Dayton has served as Rockingham County Public Schools’ alternative school for students in eighth grade and up. The county has built a new alternative school, Rockingham Academy on Pleasant Valley Road in Harrisonburg, and is expected to occupy that building by July 15.
The Dayton Learning Center sits on a 4.2-acre parcel. County real estate records estimated its value at $612,300. The county, said King, “received three quality proposals” for the building. The other bidders envisioned converting the school into apartments. Blue Ridge Christian’s bid was the highest, he said, and the use was preferred by town of Dayton officials.
Christian school officials haven’t said how the purchase affects its 2016 purchase of the Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative headquarters and an adjacent lot near Mount Crawford.
BRCS paid $ 3.85 million for the parcels.
Also Wednesday, the board members sold off another school property.
On a 4 - 0 vote, they accepted George Van Orden’s bid of $ 1,000 for the 1- acre Chimney Rock School property between Fulks Run and Cootes Store. Van Orden, King said, owns an adjacent lot. Cuevas and supervisors Rick Chandler, Bill Kyger and Sallie Wolfe-Garrison supported the sales. Supervisor Mike Breeden was absent.
