HARRISONBURG — Two Rockingham County schools have received grant money to help fund after-school programs, summer school and additional learning opportunities.
Gov. Ralph Northam’s administration awarded $217,236 for programs at Fulks Run and Mountain View elementary schools. This is the third year the school division has received these “extended year and year-round” grants, said Oskar Scheikl, superintendent of Rockingham County Public Schools.
The grants support innovative programs to address the “summer slide” that can erase gains made by students in schools following a traditional school calendar, according to a press release from the Department of Education.
“There is a leeway in how it’s used,” Scheikl said.
At Mountain View, the grant money is used for summer school and additional tutoring and academic support opportunities.
At Fulks Run, it is used more for “extended learning opportunities,” such as field trips and community events, Scheikl said.
The grant is given to Mountain View and Fulks Run in particular because of the two schools’ higher free and reduced lunch population.
The school division has matched 20 percent of the grant money received by the state for the past three years. However, if the division wants to go for a fourth year, it will have to match 40 percent of what is given, Scheikl said.
“That’s a conversation we will have to have,” he said, adding that the grant money has been a good opportunity to see what programs and learning opportunities work and which can or should be applied to other schools in the division.
In all, more than $7.7 million was awarded support the development and implementation of year- round and extended- year instructional programs in 71 schools in 15 school divisions.
