A regular meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Harrisonburg was held May 22 at Golden Corral. President Steve Alvis welcomed members and guest Adele Knott of the Shepherdstown, W.Va., Kiwanis Club.
President Alvis recognized Henry and Loretta Hawkins’ 46th anniversary on May 27. He also noted the good article in the Daily News-Record featuring the Kiwanis’ Law Person of the Year.
The Kiwanis auction at Bowman Auctions earned $1,959 from 96 donated items.
The Board of Directors voted to move ahead with the Adopt-a-Park Program pending answers to insurance questions.
The Capital District convention will be held Aug. 17- 18 in Reston.
Kenneth and Ann Shifflet were featured in the DN-R for their work in honor of people whose homes were taken to create the Shenandoah National Park and the Parkway.
Alvis introduced guest speaker and member, Lori Kizner, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisonburg and Rockingham (BGCHR).
Kiwanis members Jim Gilchrist, Steve Alvis and Ron King presented MRL Youth Coordinator Denise Munro a $2,500 check in support of the library’s Summer Reading Program.
In addition, the club met on June 5 at the Golden Corral. President Steve Alvis welcomed members and noted the week’s birthdays and anniversaries.
Members were reminded of the Kiwanis Aktion Club annual picnic on June 19 at Broadway Heritage Park.
Dennis Baugh announced an organizational meeting on June 14 to form a Kiwanis Club in Orange. Representatives of Kiwanis’ Capital District plan to attend this meeting.

Library youth services coordinator, who discussed the MRL’s Summer Reading Program.
The club also met on June 26. President Steve Alvis presided and welcomed members and guests.
The club hopes to schedule an interclub with the Winchester Kiwanis Club on any second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month. A sign-up sheet was passed.
Tickets for the Ducky Derby are available for purchase. The proceeds will benefit pediatrics departments in four Virginia Hospitals. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. The Ducky Derby will be held at the Capital District Convention in August.
Jim Gilchrist complimented Dennis Baugh on his great job on the club’s directory which will be posted on PortalBuzz online. The Roger Davis Memorial Food Booth will be open from Aug. 13-18 at the fair; a volunteer sign-up sheet is being circulated. Program Chair Marianne Halterman introduced guest speakers, Dr. Joanne Gabbin, director of the Furious Flower Poetry Center, JMU, and Ashley Ratliffe, coordinator of the Creativity Camp for Kids, which will be held during July.Member Edward C. “Ted” Hayes was then introduced, and presented his historically- themed poem on Churchill and his poem set to music, “Lady in Blue,” about Lake Michigan. All presenters were given a round of applause and a token of Kiwanis’ appreciation.
