Massanutten Regional Library will host its 2nd Annual Comic Con® on Saturday, May 5 from 1 3:30 pm at the Central Library in downtown Harrisonburg. This free, family-friendly event will feature kids’ activities and crafts, a free comic book distribution, and the chance to interact with published graphic artists.

The Comic Con® will kick off at 1 PM with “Free Comic Book Day” in the Community Youth Center (“CYC”) on the library’s second floor. Hosted in partnership with The Secret Lair Comics on University Boulevard, “Free Comic Book Day” is part of a nation-wide celebration of comics and features free comics for all ages. Comic books will be available as long as supplies last.

In addition, the CYC will host activities for younger children, including Character Crafts, a Superhero Training Center, Photobooth and more. During the afternoon, Chris Barcomb, author of the graphic novel series for kids The Amazing Adventure of Superior Sam, will be on hand to talk about his work with attendees.
The library’s first floor meeting rooms will host two different events.

At 1:30 PM, Laura Lee Gulledge, a Charlottesville-based YA graphic novelist, will present a workshop, “Making Mini Comics.” In this workshop, Ms. Gulledge demonstrates her process for making comics by developing a character, writing a six-panel story, and drawing it out LIVE with the audience. Guests walk away with inspiring handouts and blank mini-books to create their own mini-comics.

At 2:30 PM, John K. Snyder, III will give a talk entitled “From Print to Paint: Transforming Novels into Graphic Novels.” Mr. Snyder began his career in the 1980’s and has worked on many different projects, including DC Comics’ “Suicide Squad” and the graphic novel versions of  Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and Joseph Conrad's Secret Agent.

As with all events and activities at Massanutten Regional Library, MRL Comic Con® is free and open to the public. You do not need a library card in order to attend. Costumes are welcome and encouraged.
